The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) serves as the central institution of the Federal Government in the field of public health and functions as the national public health institute. In line with its role, the RKI has developed and released the CovPass app for the German Federal Government. This application enables users to conveniently store their digital COVID certificates issued by the EU directly on their smartphones. By utilizing the app, individuals can quickly and securely provide proof of their vaccination protection or recovery from COVID-19. Furthermore, users have the option to store the digital COVID certificates of other individuals, such as family members, on their smartphones. It's important to note that users maintain control over their information and data, deciding when and with whom they share it.

How the App Works

The CovPass app primarily serves as a means to display evidence of COVID-19 vaccinations and recovery. When users provide their COVID status, only the necessary verification information and data is presented through a QR code.

The QR code contains details regarding the validity of a vaccination or recovery certificate. During verification processes, the name and date of birth are also displayed for clear identification purposes.

Corona vaccinations can be certified through the EU digital COVID vaccination certificate upon request. After being vaccinated, medical staff generate this certificate which includes a scannable QR code. By scanning this QR code with the CovPass app, users can conveniently load all certificate information onto their smartphones. Subsequently, the current QR code is displayed on the home screen of the app for any future use as required.

Similarly, recovery from a Corona infection is certified via the EU digital COVID recovery certificate. Survivors of a Corona infection can obtain this certificate from their family doctor or local health office. The certificate features a QR code which can be easily scanned using the app to document the recovery status on the smartphone.

In addition, it is possible to manage EU digital COVID certificates from other individuals, such as family members, on the smartphone.

It's important to mention that all data within the EU digital COVID certificate remains securely stored locally on the smartphone. Users retain complete control over their information and have sole discretion over when and with whom they share it.

How the Data Remains Secure

The CovPass app prioritizes data protection throughout its usage period by implementing various security measures:

• No registration: Users are not required to register with an email address.
• Local data storage: All personal data is solely stored on the user's smartphone.
• Data minimization: The QR code only displays essential information, as agreed upon in the EU. Once the QR code has been verified, only the certificate status, name, and date of birth are shown.
• Cryptographic security: The QR code is fortified with a robust signature, rendering it tamper-proof and unable to be forged.
